Mobile payments & interoperability
Mobile money only reaches its potential when a customer of one provider can pay a customer of another. We help build the shared schemes that make that work.
Overview
Mobile payments have become a major part of the payments landscape thanks to their flexible applications and near-universal reach. Where each wallet or bank operates as a closed network, customers and merchants are stuck with whoever they signed up with.
Run Ventures helped initiate the world’s first national Mobile Financial Services Interoperability (MFSi) scheme, and brings decades of experience implementing and managing shared payment infrastructure.
We advise on scheme design, governance and rules, then support the technical and commercial build: switching, settlement, participant onboarding and connection to instant payment systems and QR acceptance.
What we do
Scheme design & rules
Participation models, governance, liability, fees and dispute rules that providers can agree on.
Switching & settlement
Shared switch architecture, clearing and settlement arrangements, and the operating model behind them.
Participant onboarding
Technical connection, certification and testing for banks and wallet providers joining the scheme.
Instant payment & QR links
Connecting wallets to bank-based instant payment systems, and interoperable QR acceptance for merchants.
Regulator & stakeholder alignment
Working with central banks and industry bodies to get a shared scheme agreed and launched.
What a shared scheme needs
- Rules and governance. Who can participate, who is liable, how fees and disputes work.
- A shared switch. One connection per participant instead of one per counterparty.
- Settlement. Clear arrangements, often through the central bank, for moving money between providers.
The commercial agreement is usually the harder half. We work with regulators, banks and operators to get it settled, then support the build. The interoperability case study shows the approach in practice.
Connecting to other rails
A wallet scheme rarely stands alone. Customers expect to move money between wallets and bank accounts, and merchants want one QR code that works everywhere. We design those links to bank-based instant payment systems and to common QR standards, and plan for card acceptance alongside; see EMV and card acceptance.
