Building a national mobile financial services interoperability scheme
A national mobile financial services scheme needed a neutral, interoperable model that let banks, MNOs and PSPs move money seamlessly across networks.

The challenge
Within a national market, mobile payment providers had each developed their own scheme, largely in isolation from one another. Customers of one provider or bank could not easily transact with customers of another, limiting the reach and everyday usefulness of mobile financial services.
Solving this required a shared scheme that multiple banks, mobile operators and the regulator could all align behind, rather than an approach controlled by any single participant.
Our approach
Run Ventures helped design and implement a shared national Mobile Financial Services Interoperability (MFSi) scheme, working directly with the banks, mobile operators and regulator involved.
Our role spanned scheme design and coordination between the parties, drawing on Run Ventures's broader experience implementing and managing shared payment infrastructures. We helped the participants agree a common set of rules and worked through the practical steps needed to bring a shared, live infrastructure into operation.
The outcome
The engagement resulted in a functioning shared national interoperability scheme — among the first of its kind — that let customers of participating providers transact across banks and mobile operators. Run Ventures has continued to draw on the reference model and experience built during this engagement in subsequent MFSi work.
