EMV & card acceptance
Chip is now the baseline. The work has moved on to contactless, tokens, online authentication and acceptance on ordinary phones, each with its own scheme rules.
Overview
EMV migration began as a chip-and-PIN exercise. Today a card programme spans contactless and mobile wallet payments, network tokenisation, 3-D Secure authentication for online payments and, increasingly, acceptance on a merchant’s own phone or tablet.
Each of those has obstacles beyond the technology: interbank organisation that is not always in place, coordination across payment networks, local business environments with their own specifications, and certification steps that set the pace of any launch.
Run Ventures works with EMV experts worldwide who have already navigated these migrations. We advise on roadmaps and provide consultants to guide your organisation from requirements through scheme certification and live rollout.
What we do
EMV roadmap
Where you are, where your market and schemes are heading, and a phased plan for issuing, acquiring and ATM estates.
Contactless & wallets
Contactless issuing and acceptance, and provisioning cards into mobile wallets.
Tokenisation
Network tokens and card-on-file, and what they change for authorisation, lifecycle updates and fraud controls.
3-D Secure
Authentication for online payments: issuer and acquirer readiness, risk-based flows and the customer journey.
Acceptance & certification
Terminal and host requirements, SoftPOS acceptance models where they fit, and support through scheme certification.
Beyond chip
Chip and PIN remains the foundation, but a roadmap now covers contactless limits and cardholder verification, wallet provisioning, and the terminal and host changes that each scheme mandates. Local specifications and interbank agreements often decide the sequence more than the technology does.
We help issuers, acquirers and processors sequence that work and prepare for the certification steps that gate each launch.
Online and mobile
- Tokenisation. Replacing card numbers with network tokens for wallets and stored cards, and handling token lifecycle updates.
- 3-D Secure. Authentication for online payments that balances fraud reduction against checkout conversion.
- SoftPOS. Accepting contactless payments on a merchant’s own phone, and what that means for your acquiring risk and onboarding.
Platform changes usually accompany these programmes; see payment systems migration. For vendor choice, our vendor RFP work applies.
